Unregistered Rohingya among 150 repatriated Bangladeshis

Detectives have identified an unregistered Rohingya among the 150 Bangladeshis, who were repatriated from Myanmar on Monday after months of ordeal.

Md Idris, 19, son of Md Rashid of Atiap in Maungdaw district of Myanmar was detained by local DB at Cox’s Bazar Cultural Centre this morning, our district correspondent reports quoting DB Inspector Dewan Abul Hossain. 

Later, Idris, who had been staying in Bangladesh illegally for long, was handed over to local police.

Four others out of the total Bangladeshi victims rescued in Myanmar were detained and handed over to Cox’s Bazar police in the morning on various reasons, District’s Deputy Commissioner Md Ali Hossain told reporters.

Among the four, two are fugitive convicts in separate cases while the others are suspected human traffickers, the DC said.

The 150 trafficking victims were rescued by Myanmar navy on May 21 when they were going to Malaysia by boat illegally.

Local administration identified 24 of the human trafficking victims as minor.

All the victims will be handed over to their families at the Cox’s Bazar Cultural Centre later in the day.
