Village Administrator Puts Two Rohingyas Into Wooden Stocks And Demands Ransom

Maungdaw, Arakan – The Village Administrator from Yay Naut Tha village in Northern Maungdaw Township of Arakan State puts two Rohingya villagers into wooden stocks to extort their money.
On May 8, 2014 at 8 pm two Rohingya villagers from Yay Naut Tha village in Northern Maungdaw Township identified as Abdul Gafur S/o Ashawfa Ali (Age 55) and Mawtul Hussein S/o Altar Hussein (Age 35) were put into wooden stocks by Maung Mya, Village Administrator of Yay Naut Tha village. The Village Administrator is a Buddhist belonging to Dai-net community. Since the time they were put into wooden stocks they were not allowed to have any food, up to now.
The wives of two arrestees were quarrelling before they were arrested and a head of ten households learned about that and informed the Village Administrator. The women didn’t inform any village authority but the Village Administrator arrested their husbands intentionally to extort their money. Now the Village Administrator is saying that they will be released if the ransom amount is offered but it is unknown to RB News how much the Village Administrator is demanding. However, two arrestees are very poor and they have no money at all to pay any ransom amount, according to locals.
Two young children quarreled on May 5, 2014 in the same village and their fathers were extorted by the village administrator Maung Mya. Fathers of those two children, Maung Soe Alam S/o Shawbi Alam had to pay 80,000 Kyat and Rahmat S/o Mahmed Kasim had to pay 50,000 Kyat.
