Maungdaw, Arakan – The Rohingyas in East hamlet of Duchiradan village tract in Maungdaw Township of Arakan State need urgent help for their daily livelihood, according to villagers.

There are over 600 Rohingya houses in East hamlet of Duchiradan village tract in Maungdaw Township. On May 2, 2014 at 6 pm suddenly there was heavy rain and most of the roofs of the houses were not enough to keep many families from the rain. The villagers don't have finances to purchase the thatches and nipa palm to repair their roofs.

Although they used to have a thatches firm, it was destroyed by Rakhine extremists and the police. So now they are unable to purchase the required thatches from their village. All the villagers are depending on firewood and wood collecting from hills and agriculture for their livelihood. However, as of now they can no longer go to the mountain and they are unable to rely on agriculture in the rainy season as they do not have cattle.

They have received little help from nearby villages and an INGO came to provide the rice bags twice after the mass killing in Duchiradan.

The villagers said they need urgent help for their daily livelihood and as they do not want to suffer during rainy season they need help to get thatches and nipa palm. As of now they are hopeless and helpless. They want an INGO to come and help with their needs.
