KNU press release on meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The KNU delegation, led by General Secretary Naw Zipporah Sein, met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other NLD party leaders at the residence of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on Sunday morning, April 8, 2012.

The KNU delegation shared its strategy for the peace process, in which it has been engaging in negotiations with the Burmese Government. Naw Zipporah Sein also explained in detail the points that were discussed at the negotiations session on April 6 with the Government, in order to ensure a durable ceasefire.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi welcomes the peace process, and she explained the NLD position, including the rule of law, peace within Burma, and Constitutional reform. She also raised her concerns about accountability at all levels that should reinforce effective implementation and monitoring of the code of conduct. She expressed that it would be essential for Burma’s Army to stand firmly beside the peace process in order to ensure its success.

The discussion between Daw Suu and the KNU delegation included management of economic development projects. She raised the important points of accountability, transparency and independent monitoring of every project that will be carried out.

The KNU delegation was pleased with the meeting and hopes that there will be an opportunity for additional coordination with the NLD. Daw Suu also expressed her willingness for additional meetings.
