Maungdaw, Arakan State: The percentage of students who earn passing scores from Maungdaw matriculation examination center is very low compared to other examination centers, said a school teacher from Maungdaw.
“For the 2010–2011 year, there were around 1,300 students who tested at the matriculation examination center of Maungdaw. The percentage of students who passed the exam is only 16. This is a very low profile for Maungdaw.”
“Just over 200 students from Maungdaw passed the exams. Only one student received three subject distinctions. One student earned two subject distinctions, and six got one subject.”

“Moefizul Ahmed, a Rohingya student, got the three subject distinctions, and Ahmarrul Hasson got two subject distinctions,” said an elder from Maungdaw. “Both students are from Maungdaw municipal area.”
“We want more students to pass the matriculation examination, but the situation in Maungdaw has to change. Now, in Maungdaw, most of the tea shops are showing movies all day, and many students are just sitting in tea shops and viewing the movies.”
“Another disturbing situation is that the students are chewing betel, which is a kind of drugs for students. We want to control these kinds of problems and seek improvements for the students’ education from the township authority.”
“The students who passed with three distinctions and two will still face problems to attend university as the authorities have imposed travel restrictions. The Rohingya students feel that passing with high scores on the examination holds no profit for them,” said a private tuition teacher from Maungdaw.
