OIC/Myanmar-Rohinggya: OIC undertaking a project to integrate Myanmar refugees into one Union

The meetings come as a follow up to the efforts of the OIC Secretary General, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, since criteria for considering uniting Rohingya refugees in one single Union was concluded in May 2010. The Director of Department of Minorities at the  OIC General Secretariat, Mr. Talal Daus stated that the meetings which will be held on Monday and Tuesday aim to unite Rohingya communities by forming a single organizational structure to enable them unify their efforts and stands as well as the legitimate demands of the Rohingya people and facilitate the process of their accession to international organizations, such as the OIC, United Nations and European Union.
The Director of the Department of minorities stated that the results of the meetings will be presented to the forthcoming meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) in Astana, Kazakhstan for adoption, stressing that international support will help Rohingya refugees, which are estimated of about two million people, to demand their legitimate rights from Myanmar’s military government including their rights of getting citizenship and return to their home country.
He also noted that the meetings will result in the formation of a body called Arakan Rohingya Union and elect a congress and a consultative council for the Union.
It is expected that a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the newly formed Arakan Rohingya Union and the Euro-Burma Office in Brussels after the said meeting.
The MoU is to include Euro-Burma Office’s recognition of the newly formed Union as an independent organization representing Arakan province. The Euro-Burma Office will also make every effort possible to recognize the Union as part of the new democratic opposition movement in Myanmar. In cooperation with the OIC, the Euro-Burma Office will also endeavor to bring the issue of Rohingya people of Arakan to the international community and international organizations like the United Nations and the European Union.
